Art Miami announces the launch of Art Wynwood International Contemporary Art Fair during President's Day Weekend 2012 in Miami

DECEMBER 7, 2011 (MIAMI, FL.) – Art Miami, LLC. is pleased to announce the launch of Art Wynwood for President's Day Weekend, February 16 - 20, 2012 in Miami. The five-day fair is scheduled to take place during Miami's busiest holiday weekend and will open with a VIP Private Preview on Thursday, February 16, 2012. This inaugural International Contemporary Art Fair will be held in the spacious 125,000 square foot Art Miami Pavilion which attracted over 55,000 attendees during the 2011 edition of Art Miami and is located in Midtown Miami's Wynwood Arts District.

Art Wynwood will feature carefully selected art dealers, showcasing curated indoor and outdoor projects, art video & new media, solo exhibitions and conceptual art. The Fair will continue to distinguish the Wynwood Arts District as Miami's epicenter where art, fashion, design and the culinary arts intersect. The Lowe Art Museum is one of the University of Miami's cultural gems. It houses South Florida's largest and most varied art collection spanning 5,000 years of world art history in virtually every medium.

After being housed for two years in two classrooms in UM's George E. Merrick Building, the Lowe Art Museum opened its doors on February 4, 1952 as the Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery. To celebrate the Lowe's 60th year with the South Florida community, highlights of its distinguished collecting history will be featured in this anniversary exhibition, which draws from some 18,000 works of art and showcases important objects not currently on view, or that may never have been seen by the faculty, students, or the general public.

The exhibition will be divided into the three sections: The Foundation Years, 1952-1969; The Formative Years, 1970-1989; and Building the Legacy, 1990-and beyond. It includes paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and mixed media objects that represent the unique, multi-cultural holdings of the Lowe.

While the Lowe has permanent galleries devoted to each of its major collecting areas, there are significant holdings that, due to current space constraints, have not been on view for a number of years. This exhibition will be a rare opportunity to showcase these objects, many selected by our guest faculty curators in their respective fields. The exhibition will be cross-cultural and will touch on all media in the collection, thereby highlighting the unique nature of the permanent collection at the Lowe.

The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue, featuring six scholarly essays on objects in the permanent collection by UM professors, will document the growth of the Lowe and its cultural service to both the University and broader South Florida communities over six decades. It will also be a tribute to the many benefactors and donors who have contributed to its growth.

The 2012 Youth Arts Day & Music Fest will take place Sunday, May 6th on the main grounds of the Estate from 10 am to 5 pm and features youth visual, performing and literary arts.

The Deering Estate at Cutler, Youth Arts Day & Music Fest is a community collaboration celebrating youth artists and creating awareness for the rich emerging resources Miami-Dade County has to offer. Youth Arts Day & Music Fest features a month long visual and literary art exhibition as well as a day long series of youth performance art on Sunday, May 6th. Founding members of the Living Artist Concert Series and Artists in Residence have offered their time and talent to act as volunteer judges to select award winning submissions. Youth volunteers along with park naturalists will host Kid's Zone in the Palm Grove and youth visitors are given free admission to the Estate on this special day.

VISUAL ARTS Student Volunteers Needed for the Upcoming Principals Symposium

The Parent Academy’s, Office of Community Engagement is seeking VISUAL ARTS Student Volunteers for the upcoming Ready School’s Principal Symposium.

• The Ready School’s Principal Symposium will take place next Friday, Jan. 20th at The Miami Convention Center (the Old Radisson Mart) from 8 AM to 12 PM. It will be a coffee and conversation event, where all elementary school principals meet the early care directors of preschools that feed into their schools as part of the superintendent’s transition to kindergarten initiative.

• Art majors (Volunteer Visual Art Students) will listen to the ongoing conversations at assigned tables and capture the essence of the dialogue by creating a sketches. They’ll reveal their art piece at the end of the event during the harvest (sharing) session. Media production students will video tape the event, which will be posted online.

• The Parent Academy is in need of media production students and 12-15 art students to participate and volunteer for this event.

• The Parent Academy will provide art materials, but we hope students will bring their own audio-visual equipment as they are most familiar with the technology they’ve been using at their school.

• The Parent Academy will provide breakfast, lunch and community service hours to all participating Visual Art student volunteers.

NADA Art Fair 2011

NADA is held in parallel with Art Basel Miami Beach and is recognized as a much needed alternative assembly of the world's youngest and strongest art galleries dealing with emerging contemporary art. 2011-12 Scholarship Application

Arts for Life! annually awards $1,000 scholarships to 25 graduating high school seniors who demonstrate excellence in visual art, music, dance, drama or creative writing. Launched by former First Lady Columba Bush in 1999, the program has awarded scholarships to more than 300 gifted high school seniors.

Application Deadline:
February 1, 2012

Eligibility:
Students who are graduating from a public or private school or a home education program in Florida in the Spring of 2012

Application Process:
Students must submit a completed application, a brief essay explaining "How the arts have positively influenced their life" and a portfolio of work in visual art, music, dance, drama or creative writing.

The exhibition Haiti Kingdom of this World arose from the need to draw up an inventory of contemporary creativity in Haiti, and to show the work of artists who daily question the state of chaos reigning there. There are plastic artists, photographers, sculptors, painters, performers and video artists - all essential players of their time. The exhibition is conceived as a laboratory of which they are the guardians.

The exhibition is mainly concerned to present recent and new works, commissioned from the artists specifically for this exhibition, and testifying to their creative vitality. At the same time it challenges us to think about the difficulties these artists face in making their work known through travel and exchanges with the Caribbean and the rest of the world.

Haïti Royaume de ce Monde seeks to go to the heart of this drama, to question the idea that misfortune is inevitable and to put forward another face of Haiti as seen through the eyes of its artists. The title of the exhibition is inspired by the novel of Alejo Carpentier: it offers a way of reconsidering the founding myths linked to Haiti and, without eulogizing them, attempts to redirect the chaos of Haiti and the possibilities it may contain.

Alejo Carpentier's real maravilloso (wonderful reality) long ago gave way to "wonderful chaos". Frankétienne, with his literary and pictorial UFOs, has been creating an apocalyptic world for about forty years now. Mario Benjamin, on the other hand, inhabits time and tames space. Maksaens Denis, through his video-sculptures,pursues his reflections on the deluge of images that belong to our time. But how is it possible to continue creating after such a catastrophe and all the dramas that are added to it day by day? People like to evoke the "resilience" of the Haitian population, but if Haiti really wants to be the Phoenix rising from its ashes, it needs to take time into account. Alas, it is too long. Two years after the earthquake, it is only via private initiatives that Haiti is beginning to look to the future. For the moment, only imagination and creativity are enabling Haitians to transcend their own boundaries and reconstruct themselves little by little.

Before the earthquake, Haiti did not figure on the official circuits for contemporary art; today things are even more complex. In a country occupied by humanitarian aid agencies, the devastation paradoxically betrays any attempt to construct "professional" relationships.

This exhibition goes beyond such an approach and relies on this "kingdom of creativity" to be the country's most stunning advertisement. By showing its artists to the world, Haiti hopes to transform the charity it is being offered in exchange.

Despite the wide gap between the discourses stressing that Haiti will only emerge from the morass through its own culture, and the reality of the budget allocated to it, Haiti has a large concentration of artists and craftspeople from the "new region of the world", the Caribbean - a potential which has inspired distinguished ambassadors and thinkers such as Aimé Césaire, Maryse Condé, Edouard Glissant and Graham Greene.

Travelers in Time presents large scale photographs by Lluís Barba based on known masterworks by Bosh, Brueghel, Van Dyke, Raphael, Goya and Gauguin. Barba inhabits iconic paintings with present-day celebrities and influential people, as well as anonymous visitors. The new work is plagued by ordinary iconographies, such as McDonalds signs that share a new created virtual space with artworks by modern masters such as Magritte, DeKooning and Miro. The exhibition highlights the surrealist nature of Barba's manufactured worlds by inviting the visitor to enter a new reality occupied by the three dimensional steel sculptures at once organic and geometric of German artist Herbert Mehler. Mehler's sculptures come from nature - the plant world of fruits and seeds. Mehler transform the weight of metal into soft light shapes that at once are grounded yet seem capable of becoming airborne by the slightest breeze.

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum will host the opening reception of two new exhibitions, Tour de France/Florida: Contemporary Artists from France in Florida’s Private Collection and color on color. These new exhibitions focus on contemporary artists from France, some of which have never been seen by the public before. Visitors will have the opportunity to view paintings by prominent and well-known contemporary French artists from the private collections in Florida and celebrated Geometric Abstraction artists from the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Buenos Aires (MACBA). Join us for the opening reception during Target Wednesday After Hours on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. which is free and open to the public.
This exhibition of Tour de France/Florida: Contemporary Artists from France in Florida’s Private Collections, presented by The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU and in collaboration with the Consulate General of France and the France-Florida Foundation for the Arts, is born from a desire to measure the presence of French art, diffused yet significant, in private collections of the region. The elaboration phase of the exhibition demonstrated the abundance of collections in Florida and the generosity of the collectors. Together these artists demonstrate a number of interesting perspectives as it showcases artists of international renown, like Christian Boltanski and Sophie Calle; artists not well recognized in Florida, outside of the circle of well-versed collectors, like Jean-Pierre Khazem and Denise A. Aubertin, and young artists like Gyan Panchal. Also lending to the exhibitions perspective are works from The Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, which relies on the articulation between visual arts and writing.
color on color marks the inaugural exhibition of the collaboration of The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University, Miami and Museum of Contemporary Art, Buenos Aires (MACBA). This exhibition includes works by Ilya Bolotwosky, Alexander Liberman, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and Joel Stein among many others. Curated by Constanza Cerullo, this will be the first of an on-going series of programs and exhibitions between the two institutions.

Target has teamed up with the Frost Art Museum to sponsor the museum’s popular educational series Target Wednesday After Hours. Designed to complement Frost exhibitions, the events give visitors the chance to engage with art, live music, talks, films, dance performances, poetry slams and performance art. Target Wednesday After Hours provide an excellent opportunity to meet and socialize with other people interested in the arts while learning more about The Museum, exhibitions and artists. Target Wednesday After Hours are free and open to the public and take place from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. one Wednesday each month.

Cintas Foundation presents its Visual Arts Fellowship Finalists Exhibition

After reviewing nearly 100 submissions from around the world, the Cintas Foundation has selected ten finalists in the visual arts category for its annual Cintas Foundation Fellowship competition. They are Ivan Abreu, Harold Batista, Domingo Castillo, Ivan Depena, Coco Fusco, Jillian Mayer, Fabian Pena, Dinorah de Jesus Rodriguez, Ruben Torres Llorca, and Juana Valdez.

Miami Dade College (MDC), the new home of the world-renowned Cintas Fellows Collection, will host an exhibition of this year’s visual arts finalists. The Cintas Fellows Finalists Exhibition opens with an invitation-only reception at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27,at the college’s Freedom Tower. The finalists in the music and creative writing categories will be announced at the reception.

The 2011 jury for this prestigious award included: Michelle Weinberg, visual artist and creative director of the Girls’ Club in Ft. Lauderdale; Jorge Santis, curator of collections at the Museum of Art in Ft. Lauderdale; Maggy Cuesta, dean of Visual Arts at New World School of the Arts; Rene Morales, associate curator for the Miami Art Museum; and Velia Larcinese, executive director of The Americas Collection

The Cintas Fellows Finalists Exhibition will remain on display, free and open to the public, October 28 through December 16 during gallery hours.

Winners Gain National Recognition & Become Eligible for Scholarships Totaling Nearly $4 Million

Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Florida (September 15, 2011) – In partnership with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to recognizing the nation’s most talented teen artists and writers, Miami-Dade County Public Schools has launched its call for entries for the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Awards competition, entering its 89th year, is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for student achievement in the visual and literary arts.

Creative teens in grades 7-12 are invited to submit work in 28 categories of art and writing, including film and animation, video game design, sculpture, photography, fashion design, poetry, journalism, humor, dramatic script and science fiction. Miami-Dade County Public Schools, one of 115 affiliate organizations nationwide, administers The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in Miami, Florida. The submissions are first judged locally with top winning works then presented to national panels of creative leaders to determine which receive the highest honors. This year, joining author Edwidge Danticat as a national juror will be curators from major museums, leading journalists, gallerists, artists and established alumnae. Past jurors have included Tony Hawk, Lesley Stahl, Wangechi Mutu, Bill Murray, Judy Blume, and Nikki Giovanni.

“Amazing partnerships with committed organizations are key to the success of the Scholastic Awards,” said Virginia McEnerney, Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. “The regional affiliate network, outreach partners, schools, teachers and funders who support our work share our commitment to young people, and affirm that creative accomplishment is a gateway to success in many different fields. Our students thrive with the support of scholarship partners including Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Kenyon College, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Carnegie Mellon University.”

Fifteen graduating high school seniors will be awarded with Portfolio Gold Medals, which include a $10,000 scholarship for each winner. Additional scholarships are made available to Portfolio Silver Medalists and through sponsored awards and stipends to summer arts programs. The Alliance will offer more then $270,000 in direct scholarships and awards this year. Teachers of award winners also receive recognition, and hundreds of high school senior award winners are eligible for nearly $4 million in scholarships through a network of more than 60 colleges and universities that recognize the significance of the Awards.

Since 1923, nine million students have been recognized through exhibitions and publications and have shared in more than $25 million in awards and scholarships. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has a long list of distinguished alumni who rose to the top of their creative fields since they won their awards in high school, including Andy Warhol, Robert Redford, Sue Miller, Richard Avedon, Zac Posen, Joyce Carol Oates, Tom Otterness, Sylvia Plath, John Lithgow, Ned Vizzini, Philip Pearlstein and John Baldessari. As the program prepares for its 90th anniversary in 2013, the Alliance is calling all alumni to reconnect and join in the celebration.

From October 21 to 23, Miami-ood, is launching the first annual Wynwood Art Fair, a groundbreaking, collaborative, performance-based, interactive, contemporary art fair involving virtually every major contemporary art institution and works of internationally acclaimed artists from Miami and across the country. This three-day celebration and exploration of contemporary art is more than just good fun, it’s also for a good cause. All admission proceeds benefit the Lotus House Women’s Shelter, providing shelter, sanctuary and support to women and children in
need.

More than a fair, the Wynwood Art Fair will be a dazzling three-day, contemporary art “happening” of unprecedented artistic dimension as artists from Miami and across the country explore virtually every form of artistic medium, creating spontaneous works of art “live” with fair participants. Fun, thought-provoking, educational and interactive, the Wynwood Art Fair goes beyond traditional notions of contemporary art fairs, inviting fairgoers of all ages to see, hear, touch, taste, feel, think and above all, make art!

At the Wynwood Art Fair, fair-goers will have an opportunity to not only meet the artists, but in many cases, work along side them and be a part of the creative process unfolding. Tom Shadyac, the filmmaker behind I AM, is one of Hollywood's leading comedy practitioners and the creative force behind such blockbusters as "Ace Ventura," "Liar Liar," "The Nutty Professor," and "Bruce Almighty."

However, in I AM, Shadyac steps in front of the camera to recount what happened to him after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged with a new sense of purpose, determined to share his own awakening to his prior life of excess and greed, and to investigate how he as an individual, and we as a race, could improve the way we live and walk in the world. I AM poses two practical and provocative questions: what's wrong with our world, and what can we do to make it better?

Cuban-American artist Humberto Calzada, one of the most renowned artists of his generation, will present an exhibition of recent works on the idea of Fire – the fire of war, the fire of light, the fire of passion and emotions with its metaphorical properties that are both destructive and regenerative. In The Fire Next Time, Calzada launches into a new artistic and formal language deviating from his hard -edge approach to a more unpredictable painting style. Calzada seemingly poses an open question between the personal and historical past and the promise of its future.

Magdalena Fernández's video installation, 2iPM009, brings Geometric Abstraction to a new level of expression. During the past decade the Venezuelan-born artist (1964) has developed a body of kinetic sculptures and videos, the latter with sound and movement of lines and colors. In 2iPM009, Fernández incorporates very sophisticated sound compositions to simulate rain and thunder. The visual imagery in the video consists of rapidly moving dots and lines that constantly change their configuration.

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University presents Modern Meals: Remaking American Foods from Farm to Kitchen, an exhibition that explores how technology and design remade the places where food was produced, sold, cooked and eaten from the turn of the century into the post-1945 period. Images and artifacts from the Wolfsonian collection illustrate the movement of food from the field, to the factory, supermarket, and kitchen table, in order to explore how modern technology, design, and business practices created new meanings for food and eating in this era. Drawing inspiration from the many works in CIFO's current exhibition, Viewpoint: 2011 CIFO Grants & Commissions Program Exhibition, the children will be led through a guided tour of the exhibition and a project relating to perspective. Inspired by Laura Belém's installation Jardim de Esculturas II (Sculpture Garden II) the children will participate in the creation of an outdoor sculpture garden and construct a miniature one to take home! Using photography as a way of capturing their individual viewpoints, they will explore perspective, 3-D modeling, collaboration as well as fine tune their motor skills.

We will be commemorating the start of Hispanic Heritage with a special program this year.

We are lucky to have the PIAG Museum Coral Gables, bringing a mobile art exhibit to our school.

The exhibit will feature contemporary Latin/South American Artists as well as the popular art cubes (you might have seen them at places like Tropical Fairchild Gardens)- we will also have the opportunity to create 6 cubes of our own for the museum- based on Father Varela and Hispanic Heritage Month.

Sacred Stories, Timeless Tales addresses multi-cultural mythic traditions in art, drawn exclusively from the permanent collection of the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum, which distinguishes itself among South Florida art museums by the depth and breadth of its holdings, which span 5,000 years and represent the art of Europe, the Americas, pan-Asia, and Africa. Concepts of creation, love, morality, mortality, seasonal regeneration, the cosmos, beauty, divinity, heroes, and war are explored in over 100 examples of pottery and ceramics, paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and textiles.

Mythic traditions are rooted in fictitious, symbolic narratives developed by cultures through time, which address the relationship between the inexplicable and the explicable, between the powers and forces that control the world and the human beings who occupy that world. Frequently reflecting regional differences, these sacred stories helped, and in some present-day cultures continue to help elucidate a people's religion, history, value systems, rituals, and concepts of self. As myths exist apart from, and are not dependent upon, verifiable facts or scientific objectivity for their impact on society, they typically involve deities, heroes, wondrous creatures, and fantastic events. Some renderings faithfully adhere to time-honored visual conventions. Others reflect more personal interpretations of traditional subject matter.

Among the featured objects are a 6th century BCE Greek, black-figure hydria, which describes a myth about the goddess Athena in the presence of Ajax and Achilles; Jacob Jordaen's The Judgment of Pari, painted around 1620; storyteller figure by Native American artist Mary Trujillo; an African Kuba mask known as Moshambwooy that represents the myth of the ancestral figure Woot; a 19th century Japanese wood-block print that relates a ghost story; Richard Stankiewicz's scrap metal sculpture, The River Styx, from 1953; St. George by Moises Finale; Theodoros Stamos' Persephone from 1945; a contemporary metal cutout of a siren by Haitian artist Serge Jolimeau; and a 10th century sandstone sculpture of Ganesha Breaking His Tusk to Throw at the Moon.

Mythological narratives were originally transmitted and preserved orally, during eras when people could neither read nor write, and paper was not available. Written traditions did not develop until a later moment on mankind's cultural time line, as scribes and poets sought to formally preserve stories in writing, lest they disappear. Artistic expression dramatically bridges both word-based systems, transforming into vivid pictorial or sculptural forms, concepts that spoken and textual forms of communication can only convey through mental images. Regardless of cultural derivation or individual inspiration, all the works on the exhibition represent an artistic urge to visually address those universal questions to which mythologies respond, and which unite humankind through time.

Gator Club of Miami (GCOM) has approximately 2,500 volunteer hours available to high school students in the South Florida area.

GCOM is run solely on volunteers - from the President to the Treasurer to the Web Master, we all donate our time to ensure that GCOM is the best it can be. We're always in need of volunteers for our events throughout the year.

Right now we have an immediate need for Football Viewing Party volunteers. During the viewing parties, volunteers will be responsible for assisting the board members with: - Setting up the party area

The vivid expressionistic art movement that flourished in Paris in the early 20th century and was called Fauvism (wild beasts) and was marked by the vivid use of color, distorted forms and emotionalism. The dominant groups of artists leading this movement at the time were: Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, Georges Braque and Georges Rouault. This “first” in avant –garde movements of 20th century art influenced the later movements of Expressionism, Orphism and abstract art. Fauvism was characterized by the application of unmixed colors from commercially produced tubes of paint in broad flat areas, and by a spontaneity and even roughness of execution and bold sense of surface design. This show examines the use of bold color groupings and bold shapes in themes that range from outdoor scenes, beach scenes, cityscapes and the favorite of the Fauvists, colorful holiday locales!

Open to grades K-12. 2D Artwork ONLY. Artwork should be no larger than 18” x 24” matted.

Miami Metrozoo and CBS4 are hosting a contest to identify a student who has done something extraordinary to help the environment.

To nominate an individual, please log onto http://www.miamimetrozoo.com/ , click on the “Eco-Hero Contest” icon, fill out the form and submit it online. Anyone can submit a nomination but the person nominated must be a student between the ages of 11 and 14 (as of December 31st, 2010) who resides in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Monroe Counties.

The winner will be named Florida's student "Eco-Hero" and receive and all-expense paid trip worth $10,000 for the student and an adult parent/guardian to visit Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Tetons national parks.

The trip will be chaperoned by Ron Magill and documented by CBS4 for broadcast as a television special at a later date.

Scholarship for Seniors: Fine Arts

The Claire Kantor Foundation awards scholarships in May of each year to Florida residents accepted at any US college. The scholarship also includes, at the discretion of the committee, $1,500 each consecutive year for 3 years providing a 2.5 GPA or higher is maintained. Scholarships are paid to the college in the name of the student against a statement for tuition or housing from the college. To date the Foundation has awarded 18 scholarships. Applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2010.

Scholarship Requirements

The applicant must:

1. Be a Florida resident.
2. A graduating high school student accepted to any college in the USA.
3. Include a portfolio, in any format or medium, or otherwise demonstrate a talent for any of the fine arts.
4. Submit an essay, not to exceed 500 words, introducing themselves, detailing their goals and how receiving this scholarship will make a difference to them in achieving these goals.
5. Include a recommendation from an art teacher or counselor.

A committee comprising of 5 members of the community, including Mr. & Mrs. Kantor will evaluate all applications and determine the successful applicants.

Teen Miami Internship and Exhibition Project

The Historical Museum of Southern Florida (HMSF) is looking for 20 creative freshmen and sophomores to participate in its upcoming Teen Miami program. Applicants must be high school freshman or sophomores in September 2010.

Teen Miami is a three-year museum internship and exhibition development project aimed at addressing the need for teen voices and perspectives in museum exhibitions and collections. The selected teen participants will be instrumental in helping to make the museum and the Teen Miami exhibition relevant to the teenagers of today.

Selected student interns will:
o Be trained in the behind the scenes operations of a history museum;
o Gain real life work experience by working as paid interns in various museum departments;
o Participate in an oral history project documenting teen life across generations in Miami-Dade County; and
o Develop a Teen Miami exhibition, which will open at HMSF in 2012.

Program Requirements:
o Interested students must complete an application by April 15, 2010.
o Student applicants must be entering their freshman or sophomore year of high school in September of 2010.
o Teen Miami requires a significant time commitment. Selected teen participants must commit five weeks of their time to HMSF for three consecutive summers (2010, 2011 and 2012) and eight hours a month of their time for three consecutive school years (2010, 2011, 2012).
o Program stipends: After successfully completing the first five-week museum orientation program, teens will receive paid internships at the museum.

All Kids Included Art Contest

The Division of Social Sciences and Life Skills, Art Education Program invites your students to partake in the All Kids Included Art Contest. This contest is being sponsored in collaboration with the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Office, Arts for Learning and Community Based Artists. Guidelines and submission forms are attached.

All submissions are due: April 2, 2010

GUIDELINES:
1) The All Kids Included Family Arts Festival is a multidisciplinary arts festival for children and youth of all abilities. The theme for this year's festival is "A Quilting Safari", based on the book "Elmer The Patchwork Elephant" by David McKee, which celebrates diversity, tolerance and accepting differences. Another reference is "Mother Earth and Her Children: A Quilted Fairy Tale" by Sibylle von Olfers, Sieglinde Schoen-Smith, and Jack Zipes, relating to Earth Day. We would like the student artists to depict the festival themes of safari animals, Mother Earth, inclusion, diversity and acceptance of our differences. They may draw on the festival's selected books for inspiration. Other good resources on the subject of quilting are "Kids Quilt Together: The ABCs of Group Quilts" by Kathy Emmel; and "Creative Quilting With Kids" by Maggie Ball.
Students are strongly encouraged to work as a team on their quilt projects.
2) All designs must be the original work of the students. No reproductions of existing illustrations, copyrighted materials, or the work of others may be submitted.
3) Quilt designs may use fabric, felt or paper as the primary medium. The finished piece may be
representational of an actual fabric quilt and need not be a finished fabric quilt (made up of a quilted, pieced fabric top, batting and backing). Finished fabric quilts are also acceptable.
4) Enhancements with other mediums, except oils, is permitted. Finished artwork should be suitable for hanging display. There is no limit on the number of colors used in the design.
5) Text or lettering may be used as a part of the composition.
6) Finished artwork should be approximately 40" x 40", and should be suitable for hanging display.
7) Up to 3 entries per school may be submitted. Group projects are strongly encouraged. Individual students may only contribute to one submission.
8) All submissions should have identification information printed clearly on the back of the artwork. The identification information must include: name of the student, student age/grade, name of the school, name of the art teacher, contact telephone number, contact e-mail, artist statement and title of the artwork.

Please indicate if student is a SPED/ESE student. (Art teacher has forms)
Please ask that the parent or guardian of each child complete the Art Work Authorization Form. This form transfers all rights in and to the art work, including ownership and copyrights, to the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. The art work shall become the property of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs upon submission to be used in such manner and for such purpose as the Department of Cultural Affairs deems appropriate.

Art for Haiti Auction and Gala

Dear Artists:
Our hearts went out to the people of Haiti when the 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit. They need our help, so Jerry’s Artarama is sponsoring an art auction on April 10, 2010. The Raleigh Convention Center has donated a 5,500 sq ft room and Centerplate is catering the event. There will be art collectors and corporate sponsors in attendance and our goal is to raise $50,000. All proceeds from ticket and art sales will go to Habitat International’s efforts to rebuild Haiti.

Artist donations are the key to this event’s success. There will be both a live and a silent auction. To be considered for the live auction, work must be received by March 20, 2010. Live auction work should be no smaller than 20"x30" and should not exceed 72" in any direction. Live auction work is required to be framed (if necessary), prewired, and ready to hang. Wet paintings will not be accepted. We recommend that you submit big, bold, eye-catching work!

The deadline for silent auction submissions is March 28, 2010. Silent auction work is usually smaller (no larger than 20x30). Pieces must be 2D and have no moving parts. Wet paintings will not be accepted and we suggest (but do not require) that work be prewired and ready to hang. All unframed works on paper will be displayed with clips.

Please be sure to include your name, title of the work, medium, regular selling price, your web address, and business cards (optional). If you are submitting for the live auction, please include a short artist statement (no more than 100 words). The live auction will be juried and the selected 30 pieces will be featured in our program with a color image, info, and artist statement. After the auction, we will send you a thank you letter and receipt for tax purposes.

What is Youth Art Month?
Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. Youth Art Month provides a forum for acknowledging skills that are fostered through experience in the visual arts that are not possible in other subjects offered in the curriculum.

Youth Art Month's purposes are:
1. To direct attention to the value of art education which develops divergent and critical thinking; multicultural awareness; and technical, communication, and expressive skills.
2. To increase community, business and governmental support for art education.
3. To recognize art is a necessity for the full development of better quality life for all people.
4. To expand art programs in schools and stimulate new ones.
5. To increase community understanding and interest in art and art education through involvement in art exhibits, workshops, and other creative venues.
6. To provide additional opportunities for individuals of all ages to participate in creative art learning.
7. To encourage commitment to the arts by students, community organizations, and individuals everywhere.
8. To recognize art education as a viable component in the total education curricula that develops citizens of a global society.
9. To reflect and demonstrate the goals of the National Art Education Association that work toward the improvement of art education at all levels.

Who Sponsors It, Why and How?
In 1961, The Crayon, Water Color & Craft Institute, forerunner of ACMI, a non-profit association of art and craft materials manufacturers, created Children's Art Month. Created in cooperation with NAEA, a professional society of art educators, the purpose of Children's Art Month was to "emphasize the value of participating in art for all children." In 1969, the observance was expanded to include secondary school students and has been celebrated nationwide since that time as "Youth Art Month."

Since Utrecht’s inception in 1949, we have been dedicated to furthering artistic ideals and integrity through the manufacture of high quality materials and providing fair costs. Continuing this, we present “Mini Your Work 2 - A big contest with tiny work”!

Join us for the opening reception where you can help promote your small works to the public and maybe make a little money too. Prizes will be awarded during the opening on March 25th, 2009. Great discounts will be given to all submitting artists. All the proceeds of artwork sales will go directly to you.

Eligibility:
- Open to all artists of any level
- Submissions must have been created in the last 5 years
- Artwork cannot exceed eight inches (8”) in height or width (including mating and framing) 8”x8” max.
- Artwork must be appropriate for all ages.
- Artwork must be hand delivered, no shipped or emailed entries.
- Artwork must be hang-ready when submitted.

Submission Guidelines:
- Artists may submit up to three (3) entries with a non-refundable entry fee of $3 per piece (check, cash, or credit cards – no money orders) Actual artwork is to be submitted to Utrecht Art Supplies during normal store hours from February 20th through March 20th 2010.
- You will be supplied with entry forms when you drop off your artwork.
- Each piece needs to have a sale price or be marked “NFS” (not for sale) on the entry form.

Prizes:
- There will be three prizes given out during the opening reception.
- First place: $50 gift card.
- Second place: $25 gift card.
- Community pick: $20 gift card.

Important Dates:
- February 20th through March 20th 2010- Hand deliver artwork during normal store hours for jury process.
- March 20th through March 25th 2010 - judging for the community pick winner.

Young Artists application deadline EXTENSION: Friday, March 19

Applications for this year’s Young Artist Awards are due Friday, March 19. The Young Artist Awards is a unique opportunity for eligible students to earn summer scholarships and enables talented teenagers from low-income families to attend summer art and writing programs around the country, from the San Francisco Art Institute to New York’s School for Visual Arts and nearly two dozen programs between.

To apply for the Young Artist Awards, students must meet the following criteria:

*have won a Gold Key (our highest regional honor)
*be currently enrolled in grades 7-11
*demonstrate financial need (under $40,000)

In order to earn this Award, students must complete a very short application that includes a few brief questions, a copy of the Gold Key-winning work, another piece of which they are proud, and a work-in-progress.

Young Artist Awards will be granted based on the quality and thoughtfulness of the application and the apparent readiness of the student to benefit from this experience. Teenagers who win Young Artist Awards have already demonstrated their talent in and commitment to their discipline by winning a Gold Key, and the scholarships they earn provide them with opportunities they may not otherwise have to study their discipline and meet other teens as committed to the arts as they are.

Don't Miss the K-12 Visual Art Digital Exhibition

The Division of Social Science/Life Skills Art Education Program and the Dade Art Educators Association will be sponsoring all DAEA/FAEA Members for 5 student entries for this State Assessment.

The Florida Art Education Association K-12 Visual Art Digital Exhibition promotes the achievements of students enrolled in visual art classes throughout Florida. The exhibition is open to K-12 students of current members of FAEA.

The 2010 K-12 Visual Art Digital Exhibition call for entry is on the FAEA website under the K-12 Student Exhibition. There is a $5 entry fee for each student entry. Request these funds from your school now and share the importance of having your students recognized in the only statewide art exhibition in Florida. The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2010 (postmarked).

NEWLY INSTALLED WORK: JOSE BEDIA

Jose Bedia's indigenous expressions are not folkloric nor a modern curiosity.
His work depicts indigenous cultures with a reverence for Native Americans
and African Kongo rituals.

Bedia's work is not about pursuing an intellectual experience nor is he fascinated
by the aesthetics of the form in tribal art. He is a true believer in the spiritual forces
of the ritualistic objects: "Everyone knows that I base my work on those things.
"I don't want to hide anything. I try to recreate the power of that spirit force.

The large painting by Bedia, Mupala, 2007, depicts the mask of the protective
spirit Mupala,who has supernatural abilities and is the lord of the Mukanda tribe
in the Kongo. Next to the painting is the masked figure of Chisaluke, who
represents a powerful and wealthy man with spiritual influence. This mask and
dress were field-collected in 1991 by Stanford University's Central African Art
expert Manuel Jordan. Both of these characters, Chisaluke and Mupala are part
of the initiation ritual for boys in Central Zambia.

Bedia is also a collector of tribal objects, often acquired in his travels.
Mupala, 2007 was part of the exhibition First Hand, 2007 at Fredric Snitzer
Gallery where Bedia showed paintings together with African masks.

From March 13th through May 8th, Miami's Psychic Youth, Inc. will
be taking over the project room at the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary
Art Space with a new site-specific work, TRI.

The collective will be using the room to create a sacred environment, which will serve as the setting for a series of performances. During these improvised collaborative proceedings, PYI members will activate the space by executing a chain of movements under a protocol of tasks. The installation, which includes the use of sound and lighting, will constantly change over the course of these performances, becoming a site for ritual and ceremony.TRI: First Installment will launch this series of happenings on March 13th during the 2nd Saturday gallery walk. This event will feature Ricardo Guerrero, Ana Mendez and Federico Nessi.Psychic Youth, Inc. is an interdisciplinary performance collective with a heavy emphasis on musical collaboration. Inspired by Throbbing Gristle's psychic rallies, PYI develops happenings that serve as ritualistic experiences and show appreciation for the occult.

The Coconut Grove Woman's Club presented the 8th annual Young Artists' Gallery Friday, March 5, 2010 at a preview party. The art was on display though Sunday, March 7, 2010.
