Utrecht Mini Your Work 2

Since Utrecht’s inception in 1949, we have been dedicated to furthering artistic ideals and integrity through the manufacture of high quality materials and providing fair costs. Continuing this, we present “Mini Your Work 2 - A big contest with tiny work”!

Join us for the opening reception where you can help promote your small works to the public and maybe make a little money too. Prizes will be awarded during the opening on March 25th, 2009. Great discounts will be given to all submitting artists. All the proceeds of artwork sales will go directly to you.

Eligibility:
- Open to all artists of any level
- Submissions must have been created in the last 5 years
- Artwork cannot exceed eight inches (8”) in height or width (including mating and framing) 8”x8” max.
- Artwork must be appropriate for all ages.
- Artwork must be hand delivered, no shipped or emailed entries.
- Artwork must be hang-ready when submitted.

Submission Guidelines:
- Artists may submit up to three (3) entries with a non-refundable entry fee of $3 per piece (check, cash, or credit cards – no money orders) Actual artwork is to be submitted to Utrecht Art Supplies during normal store hours from February 20th through March 20th 2010.
- You will be supplied with entry forms when you drop off your artwork.
- Each piece needs to have a sale price or be marked “NFS” (not for sale) on the entry form.

Prizes:
- There will be three prizes given out during the opening reception.
- First place: $50 gift card.
- Second place: $25 gift card.
- Community pick: $20 gift card.

Important Dates:
- February 20th through March 20th 2010- Hand deliver artwork during normal store hours for jury process.
- March 20th through March 25th 2010 - judging for the community pick winner.
- March 25th, 2010 - Opening reception and awards presentation.
- March 27th – April 8th, 2010 Hand retrieval of artwork during normal store hours.

Young Artists application deadline EXTENSION: Friday, March 19

Applications for this year’s Young Artist Awards are due Friday, March 19. The Young Artist Awards is a unique opportunity for eligible students to earn summer scholarships and enables talented teenagers from low-income families to attend summer art and writing programs around the country, from the San Francisco Art Institute to New York’s School for Visual Arts and nearly two dozen programs between.

To apply for the Young Artist Awards, students must meet the following criteria:

*have won a Gold Key (our highest regional honor)
*be currently enrolled in grades 7-11
*demonstrate financial need (under $40,000)

In order to earn this Award, students must complete a very short application that includes a few brief questions, a copy of the Gold Key-winning work, another piece of which they are proud, and a work-in-progress.

Young Artist Awards will be granted based on the quality and thoughtfulness of the application and the apparent readiness of the student to benefit from this experience. Teenagers who win Young Artist Awards have already demonstrated their talent in and commitment to their discipline by winning a Gold Key, and the scholarships they earn provide them with opportunities they may not otherwise have to study their discipline and meet other teens as committed to the arts as they are.

Don't Miss the K-12 Visual Art Digital Exhibition

The Division of Social Science/Life Skills Art Education Program and the Dade Art Educators Association will be sponsoring all DAEA/FAEA Members for 5 student entries for this State Assessment.

The Florida Art Education Association K-12 Visual Art Digital Exhibition promotes the achievements of students enrolled in visual art classes throughout Florida. The exhibition is open to K-12 students of current members of FAEA.

The 2010 K-12 Visual Art Digital Exhibition call for entry is on the FAEA website under the K-12 Student Exhibition. There is a $5 entry fee for each student entry. Request these funds from your school now and share the importance of having your students recognized in the only statewide art exhibition in Florida. The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2010 (postmarked).

NEWLY INSTALLED WORK: JOSE BEDIA

Jose Bedia's indigenous expressions are not folkloric nor a modern curiosity.
His work depicts indigenous cultures with a reverence for Native Americans
and African Kongo rituals.

Bedia's work is not about pursuing an intellectual experience nor is he fascinated
by the aesthetics of the form in tribal art. He is a true believer in the spiritual forces
of the ritualistic objects: "Everyone knows that I base my work on those things.
"I don't want to hide anything. I try to recreate the power of that spirit force.

The large painting by Bedia, Mupala, 2007, depicts the mask of the protective
spirit Mupala,who has supernatural abilities and is the lord of the Mukanda tribe
in the Kongo. Next to the painting is the masked figure of Chisaluke, who
represents a powerful and wealthy man with spiritual influence. This mask and
dress were field-collected in 1991 by Stanford University's Central African Art
expert Manuel Jordan. Both of these characters, Chisaluke and Mupala are part
of the initiation ritual for boys in Central Zambia.

Bedia is also a collector of tribal objects, often acquired in his travels.
Mupala, 2007 was part of the exhibition First Hand, 2007 at Fredric Snitzer
Gallery where Bedia showed paintings together with African masks.

From March 13th through May 8th, Miami's Psychic Youth, Inc. will
be taking over the project room at the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary
Art Space with a new site-specific work, TRI.

The collective will be using the room to create a sacred environment, which will serve as the setting for a series of performances. During these improvised collaborative proceedings, PYI members will activate the space by executing a chain of movements under a protocol of tasks. The installation, which includes the use of sound and lighting, will constantly change over the course of these performances, becoming a site for ritual and ceremony.TRI: First Installment will launch this series of happenings on March 13th during the 2nd Saturday gallery walk. This event will feature Ricardo Guerrero, Ana Mendez and Federico Nessi.Psychic Youth, Inc. is an interdisciplinary performance collective with a heavy emphasis on musical collaboration. Inspired by Throbbing Gristle's psychic rallies, PYI develops happenings that serve as ritualistic experiences and show appreciation for the occult.

Coconut Grove blog features MDPCS Visual Artists from the Young Artist Gallery Exhibition!

The Coconut Grove Woman's Club presented the 8th annual Young Artists' Gallery Friday, March 5, 2010 at a preview party. The art was on display though Sunday, March 7, 2010.

Pictured: Stephanie Pradere and Paul Japaz, 12th graders from Felix Varela Senior High. Paul sold one of his New York photographs that same evening.

MDCPS Small Works Exhibition at the Miami International University of Art and Design

At the M-DCPS Small Works Exhibition at the Miami International University of Art and Design, Bianca Khan was selected as the senior high school winner of the Renay Rossi Distinguished Artist Award for her ceramic sculpture.

This yearly award is made possible by the Dade Art Education Association and the family of former M-DCPS Art Educator, Renay Rossi, who taught in this county for over 30 years.

Bianca's sculpture will be featured on the Dade Art Education Association website.

Youth Arts Day & Music Fest
