Fifty 2-D and low-relief artworks celebrating Hispanic culture and tradition are selected for installation in the auditorium gallery of the School Board Administration Building. This high-profile exhibition is viewed by Board Members, community dignitaries, and thousands of visitors.

Open to grades K-12. 2D and 3D artwork should be no larger than 18” x 24” matted.

Art: 21… An Outlook on Contemporary Art

Twenty-first century contemporary artists are continuously pushing the boundaries through exploration of ideas, media and technique. These artists have scaled the walls of ingenuity and gone beyond analysis delving into historical and connotational contexts that are becoming ever-changing in our art world. In this exhibition, students can explore four contemporary artists who have created transparent and layered images with materials such as glass, plastic, Plexiglas, Mylar and projections, and have achieved emanations from color and saturation of photographic images creating a simple “luminosity” – Michelle Weinberg, Dimitri Chamy, Judith Robertson and Elizabeth Cheatam-Wild.

Lincoln Bicentennial – Live the Legacy

This exhibition focuses on the events celebrating Lincoln’s Global Influence and the nationwide celebration. The celebration of Lincoln’s Bicentennial will allow visual arts students the opportunity to depict history in a whole new way.

Students can explore issues, themes and events such as, but no limited to: freedom, equality, opportunity, Blackhawk War, Slavery and Abolition, Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg
Address, Presidential Inauguration and Assassination.

The historical context may include an exploration of the following visual artists who painted between 1800-1870:
John James Audubon, Matthew Brady, J.H. Bufford, George Catlin, William Merritt Chase, Thomas Cole, John Singleton Copley, Alexander Gardner, Robert Henri, Edward Hicks, Winslow Homer, Willard Leroy Metcalf, Charles Wilson Peale, Maurice Brazil Prendergast, Gilbert Charles Stuart, Thomas Sully, and Edmund Charles Tarbell, John Trumbull and Benjamin West.

Open to grades 6-12. 2D (cityscapes, landscapes, portraits, etc.) artwork ONLY in any media (watercolor, tempera, acrylic, oils, printmaking, colored pencils, markers, collage, mixed media and photography.)

Artwork should be no larger than 18” x 24” including matting. Artwork should be mounted or matted on white mats ONLY. Artwork. Identification Labels should be attached to backside of artwork.

Mystical Imagery

Artworks that often include mystery are images that go beyond the visual reality found in every day life. In this exhibition, students can explore how mysticism, space, science fiction, surreal and fantasy art, music, politics and the universe can affect and influence artistic expressions. Explore the breathtaking worlds, beautiful landscapes and seascapes, kaleidoscopic skies, portraiture and more, through abstraction, contemporary, non-objective art, renaissance, and surrealism.

Father Felix Varela Visual Art Contest

· All entries must be in by October 15 to Mr. Vinat room 157
· This is open to any Varela student
· Artwork can be in the form of a poster, collage, sculpture, mosaic, picture, and/or original artwork
· The artwork must pertain to the following theme:

Father Felix Varela: His Mission and Our School

Padre Félix Varela: Su Misión and Nuestra Ecuela

· Entries must include Father Felix Varela in some fashion.
· Entries will be judged on focus, usage of Father Varela well as creativity.

The winning English and Spanish entry will win $100.00

“Print Impress: Printmaking show”

Join us for the opening reception where you can help promote your artwork to the public and maybe make a little money too. Prizes will be awarded during the opening on November 5th, 2009. Great discounts will be given to all submitting artists. All the proceeds of artwork sales will go directly to you.

Eligibility:
- Artwork must be hang-ready when submitted.
- Open to all artists of any level
- Submissions must have been created in the last 5 years
- Artwork must be 12”x16” in height or width maximum (including mating and framing)
- Artwork must be appropriate for all ages
- Artwork must be hand delivered by the artist, no shipped or emailed entries.
- All artwork submitted must be the original (no copies or glichees)
- Original prints only.

Submission Guidelines:
- Artists may submit up to three (3) entries with a non-refundable entry fee of $4 per piece (check, cash, or credit cards – no money orders) Actual artwork is to be submitted to Utrecht Art Supplies during normal store hours from October 1st, 2009 through November 1st 2009.
- You will be supplied with entry forms when you drop off your artwork.
- Each piece needs to have a sale price or be marked “NFS” (not for sale) on the entry form.

Prizes:
- There will be three prizes given out during the opening reception.
- First place: $50 gift card.
- Second place: $25 gift card.
- Community pick: $20 gift card.

Important Dates:
- October 1st through November 1st 2009- Hand deliver artwork during normal store hours for jury process.
- November 1st 2009 - Notification of acceptance/rejection. (the decisions are non-negotiable)
- November 1st thru November 4th 2009 - pick up for non-selected submissions.
- November 1st thru November 4th 2009 - judging for the community pick winner.
- November 5th, 2009, 7-9pm- Opening reception and awards presentation.
- November 26th through November 30th 2009 Hand retrieval of artwork during normal store hours.

A Look Back: 10 years of Murals and Mosaics at Felix Varela High School

Since the opening of our school in the 2000-2001 school year, Varela art students have been leaving their mark in more ways than one. Our advanced Drawing & Painting and ceramics students have adorned our walls from the opening breezeway, welcoming students as they walk into the building, all the way through the corridors of the media center on the second floor of Varela's main building.

NFAA Awards for Young Artists

Deadline: 10/01/2009
Varies from $5,000 to $10,000

· High school seniors and other 17 and 18 year old artists in the performing, literary and visual arts. High school juniors of any age are not eligible
· Dance, Film and Video, Jazz, Music, Photography, Theater, Visual Arts, Voice and Writing
· There is a $35 on-line registration fee per discipline
· Limited amount of fee waivers available
· You may request a fee reduction by providing a copy of family's 2008 income tax return (1040 Form) or some other proof of hardship, such as a letter from your high school principal or counselor on school letterhead. If you qualify, your fee would be reduced to $10 although it would be limited to one discipline.
