Miami Metrozoo Student Eco-Hero Contest

Miami Metrozoo and CBS4 are hosting a contest to identify a student who has done something extraordinary to help the environment.

To nominate an individual, please log onto http://www.miamimetrozoo.com/ , click on the “Eco-Hero Contest” icon, fill out the form and submit it online. Anyone can submit a nomination but the person nominated must be a student between the ages of 11 and 14 (as of December 31st, 2010) who resides in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Monroe Counties.

The winner will be named Florida's student "Eco-Hero" and receive and all-expense paid trip worth $10,000 for the student and an adult parent/guardian to visit Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Tetons national parks.

The trip will be chaperoned by Ron Magill and documented by CBS4 for broadcast as a television special at a later date.

Nominations are due April 12, 2010.

Scholarship for Seniors: Fine Arts

The Claire Kantor Foundation awards scholarships in May of each year to Florida residents accepted at any US college. The scholarship also includes, at the discretion of the committee, $1,500 each consecutive year for 3 years providing a 2.5 GPA or higher is maintained. Scholarships are paid to the college in the name of the student against a statement for tuition or housing from the college. To date the Foundation has awarded 18 scholarships. Applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2010.

Scholarship Requirements

The applicant must:

1. Be a Florida resident.
2. A graduating high school student accepted to any college in the USA.
3. Include a portfolio, in any format or medium, or otherwise demonstrate a talent for any of the fine arts.
4. Submit an essay, not to exceed 500 words, introducing themselves, detailing their goals and how receiving this scholarship will make a difference to them in achieving these goals.
5. Include a recommendation from an art teacher or counselor.

A committee comprising of 5 members of the community, including Mr. & Mrs. Kantor will evaluate all applications and determine the successful applicants.

Teen Miami Internship and Exhibition Project

The Historical Museum of Southern Florida (HMSF) is looking for 20 creative freshmen and sophomores to participate in its upcoming Teen Miami program. Applicants must be high school freshman or sophomores in September 2010.

Teen Miami is a three-year museum internship and exhibition development project aimed at addressing the need for teen voices and perspectives in museum exhibitions and collections. The selected teen participants will be instrumental in helping to make the museum and the Teen Miami exhibition relevant to the teenagers of today.

Selected student interns will:
o Be trained in the behind the scenes operations of a history museum;
o Gain real life work experience by working as paid interns in various museum departments;
o Participate in an oral history project documenting teen life across generations in Miami-Dade County; and
o Develop a Teen Miami exhibition, which will open at HMSF in 2012.

Program Requirements:
o Interested students must complete an application by April 15, 2010.
o Student applicants must be entering their freshman or sophomore year of high school in September of 2010.
o Teen Miami requires a significant time commitment. Selected teen participants must commit five weeks of their time to HMSF for three consecutive summers (2010, 2011 and 2012) and eight hours a month of their time for three consecutive school years (2010, 2011, 2012).
o Program stipends: After successfully completing the first five-week museum orientation program, teens will receive paid internships at the museum.

All Kids Included Art Contest

The Division of Social Sciences and Life Skills, Art Education Program invites your students to partake in the All Kids Included Art Contest. This contest is being sponsored in collaboration with the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Office, Arts for Learning and Community Based Artists. Guidelines and submission forms are attached.

All submissions are due: April 2, 2010

GUIDELINES:
1) The All Kids Included Family Arts Festival is a multidisciplinary arts festival for children and youth of all abilities. The theme for this year's festival is "A Quilting Safari", based on the book "Elmer The Patchwork Elephant" by David McKee, which celebrates diversity, tolerance and accepting differences. Another reference is "Mother Earth and Her Children: A Quilted Fairy Tale" by Sibylle von Olfers, Sieglinde Schoen-Smith, and Jack Zipes, relating to Earth Day. We would like the student artists to depict the festival themes of safari animals, Mother Earth, inclusion, diversity and acceptance of our differences. They may draw on the festival's selected books for inspiration. Other good resources on the subject of quilting are "Kids Quilt Together: The ABCs of Group Quilts" by Kathy Emmel; and "Creative Quilting With Kids" by Maggie Ball.
Students are strongly encouraged to work as a team on their quilt projects.
2) All designs must be the original work of the students. No reproductions of existing illustrations, copyrighted materials, or the work of others may be submitted.
3) Quilt designs may use fabric, felt or paper as the primary medium. The finished piece may be
representational of an actual fabric quilt and need not be a finished fabric quilt (made up of a quilted, pieced fabric top, batting and backing). Finished fabric quilts are also acceptable.
4) Enhancements with other mediums, except oils, is permitted. Finished artwork should be suitable for hanging display. There is no limit on the number of colors used in the design.
5) Text or lettering may be used as a part of the composition.
6) Finished artwork should be approximately 40" x 40", and should be suitable for hanging display.
7) Up to 3 entries per school may be submitted. Group projects are strongly encouraged. Individual students may only contribute to one submission.
8) All submissions should have identification information printed clearly on the back of the artwork. The identification information must include: name of the student, student age/grade, name of the school, name of the art teacher, contact telephone number, contact e-mail, artist statement and title of the artwork.

Please ask that the parent or guardian of each child complete the Art Work Authorization Form. This form transfers all rights in and to the art work, including ownership and copyrights, to the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. The art work shall become the property of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs upon submission to be used in such manner and for such purpose as the Department of Cultural Affairs deems appropriate.

Art for Haiti Auction and Gala

Dear Artists:
Our hearts went out to the people of Haiti when the 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit. They need our help, so Jerry’s Artarama is sponsoring an art auction on April 10, 2010. The Raleigh Convention Center has donated a 5,500 sq ft room and Centerplate is catering the event. There will be art collectors and corporate sponsors in attendance and our goal is to raise $50,000. All proceeds from ticket and art sales will go to Habitat International’s efforts to rebuild Haiti.

Artist donations are the key to this event’s success. There will be both a live and a silent auction. To be considered for the live auction, work must be received by March 20, 2010. Live auction work should be no smaller than 20"x30" and should not exceed 72" in any direction. Live auction work is required to be framed (if necessary), prewired, and ready to hang. Wet paintings will not be accepted. We recommend that you submit big, bold, eye-catching work!

The deadline for silent auction submissions is March 28, 2010. Silent auction work is usually smaller (no larger than 20x30). Pieces must be 2D and have no moving parts. Wet paintings will not be accepted and we suggest (but do not require) that work be prewired and ready to hang. All unframed works on paper will be displayed with clips.

Please be sure to include your name, title of the work, medium, regular selling price, your web address, and business cards (optional). If you are submitting for the live auction, please include a short artist statement (no more than 100 words). The live auction will be juried and the selected 30 pieces will be featured in our program with a color image, info, and artist statement. After the auction, we will send you a thank you letter and receipt for tax purposes.

Youth Art Month

What is Youth Art Month?
Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. Youth Art Month provides a forum for acknowledging skills that are fostered through experience in the visual arts that are not possible in other subjects offered in the curriculum.

Youth Art Month's purposes are:
1. To direct attention to the value of art education which develops divergent and critical thinking; multicultural awareness; and technical, communication, and expressive skills.
2. To increase community, business and governmental support for art education.
3. To recognize art is a necessity for the full development of better quality life for all people.
4. To expand art programs in schools and stimulate new ones.
5. To increase community understanding and interest in art and art education through involvement in art exhibits, workshops, and other creative venues.
6. To provide additional opportunities for individuals of all ages to participate in creative art learning.
7. To encourage commitment to the arts by students, community organizations, and individuals everywhere.
8. To recognize art education as a viable component in the total education curricula that develops citizens of a global society.
9. To reflect and demonstrate the goals of the National Art Education Association that work toward the improvement of art education at all levels.

Who Sponsors It, Why and How?
In 1961, The Crayon, Water Color & Craft Institute, forerunner of ACMI, a non-profit association of art and craft materials manufacturers, created Children's Art Month. Created in cooperation with NAEA, a professional society of art educators, the purpose of Children's Art Month was to "emphasize the value of participating in art for all children." In 1969, the observance was expanded to include secondary school students and has been celebrated nationwide since that time as "Youth Art Month."
