May the Best Art Win

Does your art have what it takes to win the prize?
Compete against artists across the world.
May the best art win.

About MtBAW
May the Best Art Win is the culmination of much creative engineering between artist Zachary Brown and Ben McCloskey, owner of Engine Industries. We exist to provide a competitive venue for artists who wish to gain exposure for their art and who wish to build their resume. We aim to be the best value for artists who participate in juried exhibitions by keeping the cost to participate low and providing the highest quality in regards to usability, visual appeal and exposure/marketing. A contest on MaytheBestArtWin.com is not a popularity contest. Art is not inherently "better" or of higher quality because the artist has more friends. Our Juror decides who gets the prize. In case you couldn't tell, we want the best art to win.

Follow us on Twitter: http://Twitter.com/MtBAWFan us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/MaytheBestArtWincom/248450268372

By entering the contest, entrants grant MaytheBestArtWin.com a royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or subsequently developed, for any MaytheBestArtWin.com purpose, including, but not limited to advertising and promotion of the Web site, exhibition, and commercial products, including but not limited to MaytheBestArtWin.com publications. Art may appear on MaytheBestArtWin.com's Web site as well as in affiliated publications. Any art reproduced will include an artist credit. MaytheBestArtWin.com will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.

Who may enter:

Artists ages 18 and over—except for individuals affiliated with MaytheBestArtWin.com, including employees, interns, volunteers, and their immediate families (children, siblings and spouses) and others living in their households—are eligible. MtBAW will determine winners' eligibility.

What to enter:

Submitted art should adhere to the terms and should be submitted by an artist who is eligible as perscribed in the "Who may enter" section of our rules.

Entry Deadline:

The last day of any month is the upload deadline for participation in the following months show. As an example, any artist who wishes to compete in a show in February must have the images they wish to submit uploaded by the last day in January. A show in the month of February would run from the first day to the last day of that month. Entries for a show in March could be uploaded any day in February but would not be displayed until the March show began on March first.

Judging:

The winner will be selected by the juror presiding over any given show. The "best art" for that show will be selected by the juror based on consideration of merit, skill, and perceived aesthetic qualities. May the best art win.

Museum of Art: Ft. Lauderdale: American Chronicles: Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell (1894 – 1978) painted the best of America, creating indelible images of the lives, hopes and dreams of American in the 20th century. Expertly weaving both narrative and painterly images, he was consummate visual storyteller with a finely honed sense of what made an image successful in the new, rapidly changing era of mass media. Rockwell’s unique artistic legacy, established during 65 years of painting, offers a personal chronicle of 20th century life and aspirations that has both reflected and profoundly influenced American perceptions and ideals.

American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell traces the evolution of Rockwell’s art and iconography throughout his career – from carefully choreographed reflections on childhood innocence in such paintings as Day in the Life of a Little Girl (1952) to powerful, consciousness-raising images for Look magazine in the 1960s documenting the traumatic realities of desegregation in the South. Rockwell’s artistic contributions and the impact of his images on American popular culture is explored within the context of his life and times through in-depth exhibition commentary and a decade-by-decade installation of forty-two original artworks and a complete set of 323 archival Saturday Evening Post cover tear sheets, which span forty-seven years.

All of the original works on view in American Chronicles are drawn from the permanent collection of the Norman Rockwell Museum.

BRMA Escher & Cassatt Exhibitions Jan 20-April 11, 2010

The Magical World of M.C. Escher

The unforgettable visual puzzles and impossible structures of the Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) have earned Escher worldwide acclaim. Printmaker, draftsman, book illustrator and muralist M.C. Escher became one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, and his graphic works are recognized worldwide. This retrospective exhibition is one of the most comprehensive and important exhibitions of Escher’s work ever shown in the United States. It will present more than 140 rare original artworks – including the artist’s original drawings, watercolors, prints, wood blocks, studio furniture, tool cabinet and memorabilia – from the M.C. Escher Family Collection, previously on loan to The Hague Museum.

Escher was truly an artist beyond his time. He worked with multiple realities and geometric figures that combine beauty, art, math, and the impossible to expand the very boundaries of our perception. Included will be his most famous works including Reptiles, Drawing Hands, Ringsnakes, Relativity, Puddle, Waterfall, Encounter, Hand with Reflecting Sphere, House of Stairs, Eye, and Metamorphosis.
M.C. Escher is among the most mathematical and scientific of artists. A strong emphasis will be placed on public education programs in conjunction with the exhibition, which will include Escher in the Classroom outreach, studio and gallery workshops at K-12 and university levels to explore mathematics and art, infinity, architecture and tessellations all based on Escher’s work, and films including the award-winning 2007 “Achieving the Unachievable.” This exhibition has been organized by the Boca Raton Museum of Art in conjunction with Walker Fine Art/Rock J. Walker, and will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue.

Mary Cassatt: Works on Paper

One of the greatest and most popular of the Impressionists, the American artist Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) created some of her most inventive and appealing images in the print medium. She was captivated by the challenges and artistic possibilities of making prints. These works were a central part of her discipline as a draughtsman, allowing her to focus on the essentials of gesture, form and expression. Cassatt's output as a printmaker was quite small and her prints are praised for being among her most radically innovative works. This
exhibition presents 41 major prints and drawings that have rarely been shown – etchings, color aquatints, counterproofs and drawings, which reveal the range of the artist’s creative process and add to our understanding of her innovative approach to art, and her significant contributions to modern printmaking. Organized by Adelson Galleries, New York for the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Accompanying Mary Cassatt: Works on Paper is a fully-illustrated, descriptive catalogue with essays by Warren Adelson, Pamela A. Ivinski, and Barbara Stern Shapiro, which tell the story of these rare works and explore Cassatt's virtuosity as a printmaker.

MOTHERS & DAUGHTERS WORKSHOP 1-24-10 AT JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA

WORKSHOP FOR MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS
AT JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA ON JANUARY 24
A Photographic Lens on Being a Jewish Girl:
Mothers and Daughters Explore Their Relationships with Each Other in Light on Their Jewishness and Feminism

On Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Jewish Museum of Florida, mothers and daughters of all ages will have a unique opportunity to connect with each other in a criticism-free zone. Facilitated by Tracy Ellyn, the Museum's education director, daughters and their moms will share some fun and close time together, exploring issues related to females and learning how roles have evolved for Jewish women. This event complements the Museum's current exhibit, Judy Chicago: Jewish Identity, featuring many works on the theme of the women's movement by well-known feminist artist and activist Judy Chicago.

Just as mothers want more closeness with their daughters, daughters also want to be close to their mothers. Even given their generational differences, no matter how much they act otherwise, they want time with their moms and seek their approval and respect.

All participants are asked to bring photos of themselves and each other at a variety of ages and in different settings. The photos should be an expression of who they are and were. As they will be used in a photomontage project, bring copies if the originals are sentimental.

The event is free for member families; for non-member families, the fee is $15. To make a reservation, please call 305-672-5044, ext. 3175. This program is part of Florida Jewish History Month.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM

Opening Reception - 2010 Scholastic Art Awards

Scholastics Candidate: Giselle Martinez

ARTIST STATEMENT:
Art is what makes the old into new; it is what keeps life fun and exciting. It can transform a plain old book bag into something fashionable, or at least, into something that would make you smile every time you see it. Art brings into existence the thoughts, ideas, and images that dwell in your head. It is what creates people and places that can never be found. It relieves the stress from daily life, bringing peace to the heart. Art frees your dreams without regret for laziness. It is what holds together my dreamlike life.
All my creations are made to fulfill my own ideas, taste and enjoyment; therefore,
others reactions to my artworks usually do not interest me, unless I made my
projects under the original assumption of creating specifics reactions in the
viewers. However, in any case, it is always pleasant when someone considers my
work to be beautiful and reach their own interpretations from it. The greatest
surprise comes when viewers create their own stories from it, in this case, my
art pieces become the seed for new creations.
Most of my Portfolio shows my two favorite themes: fantasy and dreams. They intertwine in my head as a harmonic combination; when I think fantasy I visualize dreams and when I think of dreams I may end up with a fantasy, there are no delimited frontiers between them. They always go together, like the stars and the moon in a clear night sky.
I choose the works of art according to my feelings; giving freedom to my eyes to gaze upon them, granting my senses the right to evaluate the way they like, and then, ending the game of being selective, just pick my own submissions.
-Giselle Martinez

Scholastics Candidate: Ana Mastrodomenico

Artist statement:

Why did you select the work you submitted for your Art/photography Portfolio? I chose this work to submit to my art/photography portfolio because all my eight artworks are abstracted and different. I chose this work because I had drawn all of my eight artworks. All of my eight artworks come from my mind. I was inspired by abstract paintings and drawings. I selected these eight artworks because it was so different and all my artworks were all constructed well, all of my artworks say a message and all of them have the same type of design and colors. I chose them because it took a lot of effort and time to create.
How do you hope people will react when they look at your work? I hope that people would like my artworks and I hope the audience would get inspired by my work. When the audience look at my work they would like the message that every art work that I did would inspired the people to created and design new art. I hope that the audience would react to my art with a positive view and a positive reaction. And I hope that you guys would like my work and get inspired by my art.
What role does art play in your life? The role of my art plays in my life as a major part of my life. When I was little I have done art and all my art is constructed to be abstract and different. When you see my artworks you would see that is abstract and different. My art plays a big part of my life. Everything that I do in my life is creating art and making art. These eight artworks represent me and my love of creating new art and making new art. -Ana Mastrodomenico

Scholastics Candidate: Lisandra Vazquez

Artist Statement:

Art is not a role in my life but rather the rhythm I have lived my life to. Art is constantly surrounding us and it is our job to discover and give meaning to it all. Since I have memory my mother has worked in the art world indirectly. She is a website designer and she pretty much will design anything that represents a challenge to her. Luckily I inherited her will and passion and I frequently find myself pushing for new ideas on daily basis. Since I was young I was always captivated by loud and lively colors. They for some reason always bring tranquility to my soul consequently there is no wonder that those same colors are the one that fill my work.

Art is a happy distraction in my school life. It brings a sense of productivity and also the chance to create something from scratch. My work like I mentioned earlier is usually filled with color. Furthermore I mostly find myself creating dreamlike worlds mixed with reality. After all I am a dreamer and my artwork will certainly depict that. The work that you will see is frankly the style I have been working on lately so I decided to put it to the test and let you guys be literally the judges.

I hope that my work will open your mind to the possibilities. To the worlds of colors and fantasies that we all lived in when we were little. The feeling of discovering something new every minute and the sense of awe that came with imagining the how’s, when’s, and what’s. Or simply reminding you of those dull moments when your mind drifts and you find yourself daydreaming. -Lisandra Vazquez

Scholastics Candidate: Alex Reyes

Artist Statement:

When I began putting together this portfolio, I wanted it to contain a diversity of pieces that didn’t necessarily stick to a certain theme. However, one element that did remain constant among all my pieces was that they all portray emotion. Basically, I was feeling at the time the piece that was created had a great effect on the final outcome. For example, the “Scream” and “Mind Control” pieces were created at the beginning of this year when college applications and test scores left me seriously frustrated.

Prior to this year, I had only used Photoshop as a photo editing tool. All the pieces I had made were all very dependent on photo sources. In my current work, I took a risk by experimenting with more illustrative and graphic design elements. I believe this really paid off, and took my work to a whole new level. Throughout the creation process of these pieces, I really learned how to incorporate both styles into my pieces. I enjoyed working with Photoshop to create these pieces because it’s very versatile. I used to think Photoshop was just a photo editing software, now I know it can be used as an expressive medium to create just about anything from scratch.

I selected the pieces for this portfolio because I believe they show a variety of the types of pieces I have made. I hope that people are able to enjoy my pieces and understand how I was feeling at the time that I made them. Personally, I think that an observer can share a bond with the artist through any piece, if they are able to experience the same thoughts as the artist had while he/she created it. I keep these pieces as a type of journal, showing my thoughts and feelings during the times they were made. -Alex Reyes
