Tast of the Tropics Opening Reception, Thursday, March 21, 2013

11th Annual Young Artist's Gallery

The following 11^th grade Art students, had artwork accepted into the 2013 Young Artists' Gallery held at the Coconut Grove Women's Club.  If you know these students please congratulate them.

The opening reception is on March 15^th 2013 from 6-8 pm.

>The Young Artists’ Gallery (YAG), in its 11th year, is back at the Woman's Club of Coconut Grove. This is a joint effort between the club and the Miami-Dade County Public School System.


It is a juried art exhibition and sale where students participate to earn scholarship funds. The Exhibit Preview Party will be held at the Woman’s Club (2985 South Bayshore Drive), on Friday, March 15, from 6 to 8 pm, with a reception. Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served with musical arrangements on the piano by Peggy Hall.

The entries will be pre-judged by a prominent local arts patron and the scholarships awarded that night to the winning students and teachers. The artwork can be purchased from the students and picked up after the end of the show. This exhibit is open to the public and runs throughout the weekend on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17 from noon to 6 pm.

Each year for the last 11 years, the Woman's Club of Coconut Grove has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarship money to talented young artists from schools throughout the county. Bring your family and friends and be part of our growing cause. This event is made possible by the generous support of The Korth Family Foundation, The Coconut Grove Bank and The Joyce Pippo Memorial Fund.

Purpose: The Division of Life Skills invites you to participate in the annual “Taste of the Tropics” Authentic Assessment District-wide Student Art Exhibition.

Exhibition Description

Taste of the Tropics

Whether you are familiar with the areas of Miami or not, the tropical feel that this city emits entices natives as well as new comers. The welcoming allure of the city engages people in a way that immerses them in an ambiance of tropical culture. This thematic exhibition allows students to examine Miami’s nuances while viewing it like a true native as they explore it through the use of various media such as, but not limited to: drawing, painting, printmaking, etc. Miami’s natural waterways, mangroves, palm trees, small islands, seagulls, sultry sea breezes, the sounds of Biscayne Bay lapping at the shore, flora, fauna and sunsets that paint the sky a thousand shades of tangerine and lavender are but a few of those tropical wonders explored and interpreted through this student exhibition.

• This exhibition encompasses all styles, media, and technique in both 2-D and 3-D artworks.

• Open to grades K-12. 2D and 3D artwork should be no larger than 18” x 24” matted.

• Use Artwork Label Format provided by the Division of Social Sciences and Life Skills, Art Education Program. ALL Artwork Labels MUST BE TYPED. Please refer to forms attached.

100 WARHOLS AT OVERTURE MIAMI - DEC. 4, 2012
Unprecedented in scope and depth in the history of art fairs, this monumental selling exhibition is designed to be an accessible and educational survey of the most important artist of the second half of the 20th century.

Presented with cultural partner Taglialatella Galleries and in association with ARTS FOR A BETTER WORLD, the exhibition celebrates Andy Warhol’s career and includes work in a variety of media from the artist’s early years to his final paintings.

Developed around six distinct themes; Flowers, Animals, Politics, Icons, Early Years and Late Years, the exhibition includes iconic works and a great many works never before exhibited to the public.

Exhibition highlights are many, and traverse a great spectrum of time and sensibility. Highlights include the rarely exhibited Flash November 22, 1963 portfolio in its entirety. Warhol created the portfolio in 1968 in response to the national trauma of the Kennedy assassination and to the then unprecedented international media coverage of the event. Additional features include a rare, large scale portrait of 1980’s icon Debby Harry, and a very intimate portrait of Warhol’s beloved Dachshund, Archie.

The 12th annual Student Artist Showcase will take place in conjunction with the Beaux Arts Festival of Art. This is a wonderful opportunity for middle and high school students to present their work to the arts community. Art teachers submit up to five entries on behalf of their students. Cash prizes are awarded at a reception in the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami on Thursday, January 15, 2012, from 6:30-8:00 P.M.

Scholarship Opportunity in the Arts - Arts for Life

Columba Bush Launches 2012-2013 Arts for Life! Scholarship Program

Tallahassee, FL - Columba Bush and the Foundation for Excellence in Education today launched the 2012-2013 Arts for Life! Program.

Annually, Arts for Life! recognizes 25 graduating high school seniors from across Florida for outstanding achievement in the arts. Each recipient receives a $1,000 cash scholarship toward their pursuit of the arts in higher education.

Columba Bush, Florida's First Lady from 1999-2007, is a passionate advocate for the arts and arts education. In 1999, she established Arts for Life!, a scholarship program to recognize the creativity and artistic talents of high school students throughout Florida. To date, the program has awarded scholarships to more than 325 gifted high school seniors representing the visual arts, dance, drama, music and creative writing.

To be considered for an Arts for Life! scholarship, students must:

* Be a graduating high school senior from a public, private or home education program in Florida.

* Submit a completed application, a brief essay explaining "How the arts have positively influenced my life" and a sample of their work in the visual arts, dance, drama, music or creative writing.

A committee of judges for each of the five disciplines, comprised of respected experts, reviews and scores the students' essays and work samples. Scholarships are given to the top scorers in each discipline and will be awarded in the Spring of 2013.

This exhibition marks the 27th year of the enduring partnership between the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Miami Watercolor Society. The annual exhibition preserves and promotes the unique character of watercolor as a medium among our young artists. Approximately $4,000 in gift certificates will be presented by the Miami Watercolor Society as well as the Dade Art Educators - Renay Rossi Awards of Excellence.

FREE FIELD EXPERIENCES

Field Experiences to the Dave & Mary Alper JCC/Lisa Ann Watson Children's Discovery Museum for the Watercolor Exhibition includes a full day hands-on watercolor workshop with visiting watercolor artists.

To arrange guided tours for 2nd-12 grade groups contact Alina Rodriguez, Curriculum Support Specialist at (305) 300-6887/ alinarodriguez@dadeschools.net

All tours must be arranged through the visual art teachers at least eight weeks in advance through the Museum Education Program. Tours are Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Eligibility

Exhibition is open to all M-DCPS students’ enrolled in grades Pre-K to 12 during the 2012-13 academic year.

Presentation
Artworks submitted must be ready for installation. Two-dimensional (2-D) works must be matted with clean white mats or mounted on white mat. Two-dimensional (2-D) and 3-D works must be properly labeled. Use the Artwork Label Format document provided by the Division of Life Skills - Art Education Program Office.

Size limitations
No size limitation.

Media
Pure transparent or opaque watercolor or water media such as aquarelle, gouache, inks, watercolor pencils or crayons, finger-painting with watercolors, acrylics or tempera watered to mimic watercolors may be used. If using watercolor pencils and or crayons please remember to apply water. Watercolor is a medium that uses paints that are made of pigments suspended in a water-soluble vehicle. The traditional support for watercolor painting is usually paper but papyrus, bark papers, plastics, vellum, leather, fabric, wood and canvas are alternatives.

Beyond that the division cannot assume responsibility for loss or damage (please make sure to securely pack artwork). Use the labels provided to mail the portfolio.

Procedure
Use generic inventory entry forms provided by the Art Education Program found at http://divisionoflifeskills.dadeschools.net/asp/va_exhibitionforms.asp. Forms should be typed or clearly written, please include one form in portfolio and retain a copy for your records. Please type label and attach on right side of the matt for 2-D works. For Three-Dimensional (3-D) artworks, paper clip the typed label (s) to the inventory forms and clearly label the 3-D artwork.

Delivery of Work
Entries must be mailed to Office of Innovation & Accountability - Art Education Program Office, #9626, Room 316, Attn: Mabel Morales, District Supervisor, 27th Annual Impressions in Watercolor Exhibition.

Jurying and Judging
Teachers may submit up to five (5) pieces of student artwork for jurying.

The quality of the work and its successful presentation are one of the factors that are considered in the judging process. The judges look for originality, personal use of media, skill and technique, and evidence of the emergence of a personal/artistic vision and style. Work submitted must be original student art that does not infringe on someone else’ work or idea. If a teacher is sending in work from a lesson that uses appropriation, parody, or satire, they must still credit or cite the original piece of art. For example, changing the medium of an original work or creating a painting based on an existing photograph is still a violation of copyright. For more information on copyright visit: www.copyrightalliance.org. Students may however use their own original photograph to create an artwork. It is recommended that students include a copy of photograph used. Teachers are notified of accepted work via Email.

Return and Pick up of Artwork
All 2-D works and non-fragile 3-D pieces are mailed directly to the school after show closing. All unclaimed prizes and participant ribbons are returned with the art. 3D fragile and oversized works must be picked up on location. M-DPCS Division of Life Skills Staff assumes no responsibility for works not retrieved from the museum.

The Art Scholarship Awards will provide financial support to three successful students who plan to study visual arts, art education, or an art-related major in college.

The Miami Watercolor Society is proud to offer three art scholarship awards* this year!
The details:
• The scholarship is a one-time cash award for either $1000, $500 or $300 paired with a merchandise award (gift card) from an art supplier for either $150, $100 or $75.
• The scholarship will be awarded based solely on the merits of a portfolio (requirements attached).
• Eleventh and twelfth grade students who plan to major in visual arts, art education or an art-related curriculum in college are eligible to enter.
• Students must have a 2.5 GPA overall cumulative GPA and 3.0 GPA in art courses.
• Every student who enters will receive a complimentary one-year membership to the Miami Watercolor Society.
